The most remarkable side effect was a tendency to ankle pitting or edema, which occurred in four patients during hospitalization and in three other cases after discharge. Strategic Communications Planning Meeting With the dramatic increase in the number of trial participants expected in the coming years, the HVTN is increasing its focus on external communications, with the creation of a Communications Department and the hiring of an Associate Director for Communications and External Relations see page 8 ; . Communications was a hot topic at the recent Full Group Meeting, including discussions at sessions like "Workshops to Overcoming Barriers to Enrollment" and the Phase III Committee. One of the last sessions at the Full Group Meeting was the "Strategic Communications Planning Meeting, " which brought together the Division of AIDS DAIDS ; , the HVTN, and trial sites, including Community Educators and CAB members, to explore the elements of a strategic communications plan for the Network. Representatives from DAIDS and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center shared information on their communications efforts, which often provide a context for HVTN communications.
