Small Cell Lung Cancer The relevance of age to prognosis in patients with small cell lung cancer SCLC ; remains poorly de fined.334 Some studies have found age to be a negative prognostic indicator, 355-357 while others have not.358-360 As in NSCLC, stage, treatment, and performance status are the most important prognos tic indicators. A small percentage approximately 8% ; of patients with SCLC are candidates for surgi cal resection.361 Chemotherapy is the cornerstone of treatment for the majority of cases of SCLC. Be cause the most frequent site of recurrence after treatment is the primaiy lesion, combined radiother apy and chemotherapy is recommended for patients with limited disease. However, for patients with extensive disease, adjuvant radiotherapy has not been shown to further improve survival over chemo but, therapy alone to instead, can increase toxicity. There appears be no significant difference in the frequency of radiation pneumonitis between patients older or younger than 70 years of age, although the pneumonitis may be more severe in older patients, which, possibly, is a reflection of decreased pulmo nary reserve and or coexisting lung disorders in the elderly.362 The principal issue in SCLC treatment for an individual is candidacy for chemotherapeutic.

That in these patients, as in our experimental animals, ketorolac absorption from the gastrointestinal tract was altered despite a lack of significant changes in clearance. In summary, our results demonstrate that liver damage can alter pharmacokinetics even in absence of effects on drug metabolism. The overall effect of liver diseases on drug kinetics appears to be more complex than assumed. Hence, uncritical extrapolation of data should be avoided. Systematic pharmacokinetic studies in different types of liver damage should be performed to fully characterize this matter. The use of experimental models of liver damage, mimicking the different disease states found in the clinical situation, appears to be a suitable strategy for this purpose.

More than 1, 100 schools will receive .5 million in Texas Educator Excellence Grants. Under this program created by the Texas Legislature and Gov. Rick Perry last spring, the 1, 119 participating schools received grants of , 000 to 0, 000, depending on the size of the student population on their campus. "We're pleased with the strong, positive response the Texas Educator Excellence Grant is receiving. This is one concrete way to say `thank you' to those teachers who are making a positive and profound impact on the lives of students. With suggested incentive awards to individual teachers of , 000 to , 000, this is a substantial financial reward for these educators, " said Commissioner of Education Shirley J. Neeley. Schools that were eligible to receive this grant ranked in the top half of the state in the percentage of educationally disadvantaged students for their school type, such as high school or elementary, and were rated exemplary or recognized or ranked in the top quartile performance level for improvement in math and reading. Slightly different criteria applied to alternative education campuses. Eligibility was determined using the most recent complete set of performance and demographic information available this spring. This data was from the 2004-2005 school year. However, awards to individual educators will be determined by student performance during the 2006-2007 school year. Individual awards may be based on any objective, quantifiable measure of student achievement, such as the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, benchmark exams, end-of-course exams or portfolio assessments. Of the 1, 151 campuses on the final eligibility list, 1, 119 schools applied or are planning to apply for the grant, representing a 97 percent participation rate. Each participating campus has crafted a plan that details how it will determine which employees get the incentive pay. The plans were created with the input of educators on that campus. Consequently, the plans will vary from school to school. The Texas Educator Excellence Grant funds are divided into two components. Part I funds represent 75 percent of the total campus award. These funds are used to reward classroom teachers based on improvements in student achievement at the campus. These funds must be used to award teacher initiative and assignments to hard-to-staff subjects. Awards to teachers must be made between May 2007 and Oct. 15, 2007. Part II funds represent 25 percent of the total campus award. This money can be used to award other school personnel, provide professional development and other activities related to improving student achievement. The initial 97 percent participation rate by schools encumbers .5 million of the 0 million set aside by the Legislature for this program. To fully use all the funding, an additional group of schools will be offered the option of participating in this program later this fall.
