Data are contradictory. Low GI starchy foods generally are perceived as more satiating, perhaps because of a slower gastrointestinal passage and digestive phase, inducing satiety signals through release of gastrointestinal hormones. A practical implication is to use low GI starchy foods in the treatment of overweight, obesity and metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
Hypotheses on the possible physiological role of the increased secretion of less acidic, short-lived FSH isoforms during the peri-ovulatory period Ulloa-Aguirre et al., 1995; Zambrano et al., 1995 ; . These less acidic pH 4.50 ; isoforms may participate in the induction of plasminogen activator which, by activating plasmin, leads to the final breakdown of collagen in ovulating follicles. The short plasma half-life of these variants would ensure induction of an acute effect, without interfering with the normal development of the cohort of follicles destined to be recruited during the following cycle Fauser and van Heusden, 1997 ; . On the other hand, the fact that less acidic FSH isoforms as those present in rFSH ; exhibit a higher in-vitro biopotency than uFSH Ulloa-Aguirre et al., 1992a, 1997; Lambert et al., 1995 ; and behave as full agonists in vivo despite having relatively accelerated plasma disappearance rates Ulloa-Aguirre et al., 1992a; de Leeuw et al., 1996 ; , give a partial explanation to recent findings indicating that rFSH may be more efficient than urinary FSH including its highly purified variant ; for ovarian hyperstimulation in women undergoing in-vitro fertilization Out et al., 1996; Bergh et al., 1997 ; . Finally, a recent study advocates the use of quantitative isoelectric focusing to predict the invivo biological activity of human FSH Mulders et al., 1997 ; . Because such studies have been based exclusively on the behaviour of the different rFSH charge isoforms in the low sensitivy ovarian weight augmentation assay which depends highly on the plasma disappearance rate of the glycoprotein ; , without taking into account the potency of the isoforms at the target cell level or other acutely inducible in-vivo effects, the assumption that the charge distribution profile may be taken as an estimation of the in-vivo potency of a given FSH preparation should be exercised with caution. In summary, rFSH produced by CHO cells has a less acidic charge distribution profile, exhibits higher in-vitro bioactivity and plasma clearence rate and induces tPA enzyme activity more rapidly than a highly acidic FSH preparation from urinary origin. Apparently, the high biological activity that the rFSH glycoforms exhibit at the target cell level may compensate and even surpass the drawback imposed by their relatively shorter plasma half-life. Further studies employing highly purified, naturally occurring FSH variants are still necessary to finally assign a physiological role to the variations in isoform secretion normally occurring during the human menstrual cycle.

Registered under the CNPq IRD convention, the HYBAM project is a model of multi-institutional and international cooperation. It involves the ANA, ANEEL and UnB, as well as researchers from other Brazilian USPCENA, UFRJ, IBGE, IEPA ; Institutions and some neighboring countries Bolivia, Peru and Equator ; . We show here the wide spectrum of collected data on the Amazon River and its affluents, from Tabatinga to the Atlantic Ocean and an extensive view on modelling and applied domains. Complementary approaches are developed to understand hydrologic dynamics related to climatic forcing, sedimentary and geochemical dynamics. The methodology implements a hydrologic permanent station net. The studies cover an altimetric calibration of the whole hydrologic network, rivers discharge gouges and several parameters to quantify dynamic processes. They encompass the wave tide influence on liquid and sedimentary discharge of theAmazon River and the influence of climatic index on its respective variability. The role played by flood plains on hydrodynamics is studied and inundation dynamics is followed by satellite imagery. Balance between erosion, transfer and depositional processes, from Andean sources to flood plains, is estimated by flux method and the present sedimentation, by geochemical tracers and geochronologic models. Space and time variability of trace element signatures of surface waters is studied to evidence trap areas and speciation risks of some heavy metals related to a historic study of mercury contamination. One of the scopes is the Amazon river hydrology modeling climate versus river discharge relation ; , its hydrodynamics applied to the prediction of water levels, flow velocities and flood plain dynamics, and of its sedimentology transport capacities and sediment trapping quantification ; . Modeling will be useful to investigate the impact of anthropic activities dams, mining, and so on ; improve management of water resources, predict floods cities of Manaus or Santarm ; as well as navigability conditions Madeira River ; . The research teams are preparing the corresponding GIS-Amaznia for these studies. -- May 24, 2002.

The TMS320C6201 C6202 C6701 EMIF supports 2-bank, 16M-bit SDRAM and 4 bank, 64M-bit SDRAM, providing an interface to high-speed and highdensity memory. The EMIF supports the SDRAM commands shown in Table 98. The 16M-bit and 64M-bit SDRAM interfaces are shown in Figure 914 and Figure 916, respectively. Table 99 lists all of the possible SDRAM configurations available via the TMS320C6201 C6202 C6701 EMIF. The TMS320C6211 C6711 EMIF allows programming of the addressing characteristics of the SDRAM, including the number of column address bits page size ; , the row address bits pages per bank ; , and banks maximum number of pages which can be opened ; . Using this information, the 'C6211 C6711 is able to open up to four pages of SDRAM simultaneously. The pages can all be in a single CE space, or distributed across multiple CE spaces. Table 910 summarizes the pin connection and related signals specific to SDRAM operation. Table 98 does not apply to the 'C6211 C6711 because page characteristics are programmable. The 'C6211 C6711 can interface to any SDRAM that has 8 to 10 column address pins, 11 to 13 row address pins, and two or four banks and mesoridazine.

The Biopsy and Staging Biopsy is the key step in the diagnosis of an osteosarcoma. Improperly performed biopsies are a frequent cause of misdiagnosis, amputation and local recurrence, and they may have a negative effect on survival. All biopsy samples should be obtained by the orthopedic oncologist who will perform the definitive procedure or by a physician directly under the oncologist' supervision.10 s After the biopsy has been performed a pathologist or oncologist can stage the cancer. The purpose of staging tumors is to stratify risk groups. The conventional staging used for other solid tumors is not appropriate for skeletal tumors because these tumors rarely involve lymph nodes or spread regionally. Rather, the staging devised and introduced by Enneking in 1980 is based on grade, extracompartmental spread, and whether or not metastases are present.11 Staging studies are helpful in planning the surgical approach to the tumor and specifying the region of the tumor that will most likely yield representative pathologic material.2, 6, 10 The key components to the staging system are the histologic grade of the tumor low grade versus high grade ; , the anatomic location of the tumor intracompartmental versus extracompartmental ; , and the absence or presence of metastatic disease. The staging system is typically depicted as follows: Low-grade tumor, intracompartmental - I-A Low-grade tumor, extracompartmental - I-B High-grade tumor, intracompartmental - II-A High-grade tumor, extracompartmental - II-B Any tumor with evidence of metastasis III The definition of "a compartment" is a central and crucial concept related to the Enneking staging system. In general, a compartment may be defined as any individual bone ie, each bone is a compartment unto itself ; , intraarticular spaces ie, a purely intraarticular lesion is intracompartmental ; , and any clearly identified fascially enclosed space eg, the anterior compartment of the lower leg ; .3, 11 For osteosarcoma, the principal initial question regarding staging is whether the tumor has metastasized. Other features of the tumor may impact the prognosis. These include LDH and alkaline phosphatase see Workup Labs ; , site of primary tumor mostly related to ease of complete resection ; , histologic response to chemotherapy, and cause of disease patients with osteosarcomas arising from Paget disease have a particularly poor prognosis ; .3, 5, 11 Stage I - Low-grade lesions Stage II - High-grade lesions Stage III - Metastases Medical Therapy Before the advent of multiagent chemotherapy, the prognosis for patients with osteosarcoma was dismal.2, 8 Despite treatment consisting of a wide or radical amputation, approximately 80% of patients died of distant metastases, usually within 2 years. With today' multiagent chemotherapy s regimens and appropriate surgical treatment, most recent series report long-term survival of 60% to 70% for patients with high-grade osteosarcoma without metastases at initial presentation and up to 90% for low-grade lesions. Standard chemotherapeutic regimens include preoperative induction ; and postoperative adjuvant ; chemotherapy. Preoperative chemotherapy induces tumor necrosis in the primary tumor and provides early treatment of micrometastatic disease. It helps to facilitate surgical resection with wide margins and therefore has been one of the main factors contributing to improved limb salvage rates. Drugs that have been shown to be most effective against osteosarcoma include doxorubicin Adriamycin ; , cisplatin Platinol ; , ifosfamide Ifex ; with mesna Mesnex ; and high-dose methotrexate Rheumatrex ; with leucovorin calcium rescue.3, 10 The mechanisms of action and side effects of these chemotherapeutic agents are summarized in Table-1.

It is only possible here to attempt to define the parameters of these expenditures by using plausible assumptions. It is tempting to not even try to measure this because of the difficulty of doing so. However, this does not appear to be satisfactory because it would give free reign to subjective representation of totals estimates for " drug money." The OFDT thought that it would be preferable to fuel the debate over this question by proposing to make this measurement by using plausible and reasonable assumptions. When these elements are clearly defined, it is possible to discuss the assumption and measure variations in the figures obtained when certain parameters of the calculation are modified. We will limit ourselves to making an assessment of expenditures for cannabis and heroin. It is not possible to make a reasonable assessment of expenditures for cocaine and synthetic substances due to a lack of necessary information. Two methods for assessing expenditures may be used and methadone.

By Teresa C. Gentile, Aysegul H. Uner, Robert E. Hutchison, Jonathan Wright, Jonathan Ben-Ezra, E. Clifton Russell, and Thomas P. Loughran, Jr Clonal expansions of CD3 + large granular lymphocytes LGL ; have been classified as T-LGL leukemia. The majority ofpatients with T-LGL leukemia have a chronic disease years ; manifested often bysevere neutropenia, rheumatoid arthritis, and mild-to-moderate splenomegaly. The characteristic phenotype of the leukemic LGL is CD3'. CD8 + , CD16'. CD57 + , describe an aggressive variant and CD56-. In this report we of T-LGL leukemia in which leukemic LGL also expressed CD56, as identified by two-color flow-cytometry analysis. In contrast to the chronic nature typical of T-LGL leukemia, these patients presented with a severesystemic illness that was rapidlyprogressive and resistant t o treatment. Atypical clinical features included rapidly increasing spleen size t o massive proportions, extensive lymphadenopathy, and the presence of B symptoms fever, nightsweats, weight loss ; . Hematologic and pathologic features were also unusual for T-LGL leukemia. These patients had very high LGL counts at diagnosis range 11, 692 t o 26, 312 pL ; , which increased rapidly despite treatment. Histopathologic examination of splenic sections showed extensive infiltration of red pulp cords and sinuses by leukemic cells with atrophy of the white pulp, These clinicopathologic features are similar t o those described for patients with natural killercell NKI-LGL leukemia, whose cells are also CD56 + . However, unlike NKLGL leukemia, we could not show a direct pathogenic role for Epstein-Barr virus EBV ; , asSouthern-blot analyses using an EBV-joinedtermini probe were negative in these patients. Our findings suggest that CD3 + , CD56 + LGL leukemia is a distinctclinicopathologic entity separate from the usual CD3 + , CD56- T-LGL leukemia. The expression on leukemic LGL of CD56, an adhesion molecule, may determine the agf gressive biologic nature o this newly described disease. 0 1994 by The American Society of Hematology and methenamine.

Of 14-21 days. PHN can last for several years. There are no available data for direct comparison with other licensed PHN treatment alternatives, therefore the relative efficacy and safety of lidocaine plaster is not known. Indirect comparison data with gabapentin 1800mg ; do not produce any robust evidence that lidocaine plaster is likely to produce more clinical benefit than gabapentin. The physical barrier created by the plaster over the sensitive area seems to contribute to an analgesic effect. This might explain why, in a parallel group study, lidocaine plaster has shown non-significant differences compared to placebo for pain-reduction and pain relief. Lidocaine plaster costs are 880-2650 per year compared to 17-408 for Formulary alternatives and methimazole.

Oseph M. Magliochetti, known by many as "Joe Mag, " began his career in 1966 as a management trainee at Victor Manufacturing and Gasket in Chicago, Illinois. Later that year, Dana acquired Victor, and 34 years later, Magliochetti was elected Dana's sixth chairman. His Dana service included a variety of sales, engineering, and manufacturing positions at several divisions and, later, leading both the European and North American operations. Tragically, he died in 2003 following a brief illness. People throughout the industry knew Magliochetti for his quick smile, his unfailing generosity, and his staunch commitment to humility and integrity. In addition to his Dana responsibilities, Magliochetti served as a board member for several other corporations, including BellSouth and CIGNA, led various automotive industry groups, and shared his time and talents with many community and nonprofit organizations and methocarbamol.
