Seen in 21% of patients, but only three 10% ; experienced grade 3 toxicity. Anemia was infrequent, with only 6.8% of patients affected by grade 2 toxicity. The other non-hematological toxicities were as follows: asthenia recorded in 14% of patients, increase in serum transaminases in 10% grade 1 in 7% and grade 2 in 3% of cases ; , and grade 1 neurotoxicity in 10%. Discussion In several phase II studies on ABC patients single-agent GEM has yielded a 25%-46% ORR depending on type and extension of pretreatment [5, 6]. VNR has been shown to be a highly active agent in ABC with a 40%45% ORR [2]. Although efficacy is higher in patients treated with VNR asfirst-linechemotherapy, significant antitumor activity has also been reported when employed as second-line therapy [2, 7]. The 48% ORR achieved in this study, although not yet satisfactory, is among the highest reported for second-line treatment of ABC [1, 8]. Tolerance to the GEM-VNR combination was fairly good with leukopenia being the main hematologic toxicity. In conclusion, the results of this pilot study suggest that GEM-VNR regimen is active as second-line chemotherapy for ABC even if pretreated with anthracycline and taxanes. Further studies with a larger number of patients are required to confirm these results.

Meeting of the SAA in Denver on Saturday, March 23, 2002 from 10: 00 a.m. to noon, with individual consultations scheduled thereafter. Preregistration is required, as the numbers of spaces are limited. Led by professional archaeologists from the NEH program staff, the workshop will provide a basic orientation to opportunities and offer specialized advice. Information about other funding sources such as NSF, Wenner-Gren, and National Geographic will also be summarized. The workshop will emphasize the basic parameters of grantsmanship, from strategies and tactics in planning the project, to assembling information for preparing the proposal, to finding cost share, to disseminating research results. Practical advice and considerations such as consulting with an appropriate program officer, obtaining samples of successful applications, negotiating with your institutional grants administrator, and "dos and don'ts" will be discussed.
What are the implications of policies and laws on multifunctional and sustainable land-use practices and what are the ways and means to foster such practices? Which positive and negative linkages exist between forestry policies and other public policies addressing environmental protection and natural resources utilization and what are the ways and means to built comprehensive and consistent policy networks? To what extent do policy regulations address the value of forests in a comprehensive manner and allow for reasonable balance between public and private interests? What are the conditions for building consensus among stakeholders involved in land management and what are appropriate instruments to foster participation and to develop agreed solutions? What are appropriate political and institutional requirements and what policy instruments can be selected in order to promote and support locally adapted land management solutions? As for other land management sectors, sustainable development is today the overarching political principle and the benchmark for judging to what extent the forest sector and forest policies contribute to economic and social welfare and to a safe environment that benefit present and future generations. The essential content of this principle is that economic growth, social integration and caring for a liveable environment are on an equal footing. Economic growth, social integration and protection of the environment depend on each other, cannot be substituted for, and are fundamental to social progress and common welfare. The principal of sustainable development and the more specific political commitments of countries and the international community set the task for research and science. The development of an integrative perspective to gain more knowledge about the interactions among social systems and human behaviour, ecosystem processes and environmental change is essential in order to understand more closely the impacts and feedbacks between man and his natural resource base. With regard to forests one has to understand the interactions between society and forest ecosystems, their social and cultural meaning, their potential for providing different combinations of goods and services, and their stability and biodiversity under alternative management systems Piussi and Farrel 2000; Fhrer 2000 ; . Figure 3 indicates different dimensions of a systematic approach in order to develop socioeconomic research on human environment system interactions at various scales. It relates dynamics and change as constituting elements in all societies to impacts on and feedbacks from the renewable natural resource base. It considers as a third dimension objectives, technologies, instruments, outcomes and feedbacks as key elements in public policy development and private and collective decision making processes. The first dimension deals with change in societies. Cultural values expressed, for instance, in personal life styles and spiritual convictions, and social demands that relate to individual freedom, democratic participation and political organization are important driving factors that induce and reflect dimensions of societal change. In combination with changing economic needs and opportunities to produce multiple goods and services they initiate continuously changes and innovations in the prevailing political and legal systems. And altogether, these factors determine to a large extent individual and collective decision-making processes in natural resources utilization and management with landowners and land users as important primary agents. The second dimension addresses present and likely future reciprocal interactions between human interventions and the renewable natural resources base. This includes global and regional environmental interactions; interactions at the level of landscapes, ecosystems or watersheds; interactions that result from alternative or combined land use systems; and interactions at the level of individual or corporative ownership and land management units and renagel.

Early Jurassic and comprises of fluviatile arkosic sandstones, conglomerates and occasionally marls and or shales. During the Karoo sedimentation there were occasional marine incursions as evidenced from the occurrence of evaporites in the Mandawa basin Fig. 3, p. 271 ; Kajato, 1982 and references therein ; . The Karoo sediments were mainly deposited in low relief areas and in areas adjacent to the Precambrian basement of the Mozambique belt. 2.2. Karoo sediments The Karoo sediments are of continental origin ranging in age from Carboniferous to Early Jurassic Wopfner and Kaaya, 1992 ; . They form the basal part of the sedimentary sequence and overlie unconformably the Precambrian basement complex of the Mozambique belt of Tanzania Fig. 2, p. 271 ; . In northern coastal Tanzania, NW of Tanga town Figs. 2 and 3, p. 271 ; , the Early Jurassic is represented by fluviatile arkosic sandstones and siltstones resting on basal conglomerates. These sedimentary rocks dip uniformly to the east with angles increasing from 5 to 10 inland to as much as 30 at the coast Kent et al., 1971 ; . According to Quennell et al. 1956 ; , the thickness of the Tanga beds is at least 900 m. In the hinterland of Dar es Salaam, arkosic cross-bedded sandstones and siltstones as well as conglomerates with occasional shales and mudstones known as the Ngerengere Formation ; crop out between the Ngerengere and the Kidugallo areas Fig. 2, p. 271 ; . Total thickness of this unit is about 760 m Hennig, 1924 ; and it is correlated with the Karoo Group of the Tanga area. In southern coastal Tanzania, particularly in the Mandawa basin Fig. 3, p. 271 ; , a different depositional environment prevailed in the period between the Triassic and the Early Jurassic Kent et al., 1971 ; . This environment was characterized by an evaporitic sequence of gypsum, halite and anhydrite intercalated with silty shales the Pindiro Group ; . This evaporitic sequence developed in a very rapidly subsiding part of the basin in which a restricted marine incursion took place; whereas the continental Karoo sequence accumulated in the slow sinking part of the basin Kent et al., 1971 ; . The intercalation of these evaporites and.
